Want to know about planting in the fall? Love garlic? Then this is the workshop for you! Gardening doesn’t end when October brings the first frost to your door. Become inspired to reduce trips to the grocery store on those harsh, wintery days and learn to get started growing organic food at home. Southwestern British Columbia has a great climate for winter gardening. Learn about the wonders of growing garlic and how to keep the harvest going through the winter. Container gardening is great for folks who live in apartments, rental suites, or don't have a backyard garden to plant in.

Topics will include:

Plant selection, soil preparation, covers and other helpful infrastructure.  How to care for your garden on zero-degree nights and where to go for help. Participants should bring a willingness to get their hands dirty. All participants will get an opportunity to plant garlic in a pot to take home with them!

About the Facilitator:

Jodi Peters works for the Environmental Youth Alliance. She facilitates all sorts of skill building workshops, teaches permaculture principles and applications, and urban agriculture techniques. She also helps oversee EYA’s Urban Seeds program, and works with volunteers and staff to save and process seed from the EYA’s Youth Garden. She loves spending time out of the office, picking up coffee grounds to make into compost, working in the beautiful urban green spaces that EYA is involved in creating and maintaining, and she's always delighted to see the creatures big and small that share these spaces with us!

The Urban Agricultural Skills Training Program is a workshop series designed to equip SFU students and community members with the skills to produce, preserve, and prepare their own food. Participants will engage in discussions of our food systems both locally and globally and gain tools to create change in their own lives and communities.

The SFU Local Food Project is a campus based organization that aims to increase the amount of local food available on campus, create awareness of the benefits of local food, and encourage and support alternative food production and distribution systems on campus.
